Knowledge: Managing KVM on IBM Z with oVirt - Part 2

Adding a Host

Now it is time to add the host to the cluster. Back on the dashboard,
  • select the “n Hosts” link again, and
  • click the “New” button.
  • Enter a descriptive name for
    • the host,
    • the host's DNS name or IP address,
    • and the host's supervisor password.
  • Hit “OK” to add it to the cluster.

This will immediately trigger the installation process, which consists of installing additional packages and reconfiguring the system. After successful installation, the host will be added to the cluster and should be up and running.

Note: It is advisable to have at least two hosts in a cluster to provide a minimum level of availability. This approach allows to migrate VMs to another host in the cluster when a host has to be serviced.

Uploading an ISO Image

Installing a virtual machine from scratch requires installation media, e.g. a DVD ISO image. The ISO image has to be uploaded to a storage domain, so that it can be used by a virtual machine later on. To do this,
  • select the “n Data Storage Domains” link, then
  • the storage domain for the ISO, and
  • switch to the “Disks” tab.
  • Finally select “Upload->Start” to bring up the upload pop-up window.

Note: A bootable ISO image is required to perform a VM installation. Currently known to be working ISOs are:
  • Ubuntu 16.04 and higher
  • SUSE SLES12 SP2 and higher
  • Red Hat RHEL7.5 and higher.
